WRITE!!

Thus speaks the LORD God of Israel, saying: ‘Write in a book for yourself all the words that I have spoken to you.  (Jeremiah 30:1-3 )

I like to practice calligraphy.  I especially enjoy copying favorite scriptures into a little notebook.  When done correctly the lettering is quite beautiful.  I’ve often wondered what it would be like to be a Jewish scribe in the ancient world, daily marching to the job of writing the Holy Scriptures.  They had to follow stringent rules in order to be able to write, and their tools were at best, primitive.  I admire the dedication and concentration such endeavors required.  I know first-hand how difficult it is to maintain the size and spacing of letters.  A scribe named Baruch recorded the book of Jeremiah.  Jeremiah 36:17 says:  And they asked Baruch, saying, “Tell us now, how did you write all these words—at his instruction?”   We have this devoted group of people who endured many hardships to thank for the beginnings of our Holy Bible.

To write is a command given many times in the Bible.  This is a command that not only Moses and the prophets, but also the disciples and Paul, took to heart.  Each contributor’s effort has shared with us the good news of the scriptures.  They wrote it on their hearts so that we can write it on our hearts. I thank my God for the many voices of the Bible and for the opportunity to read and learn more about my Lord.  So many people have been inspired by the Bible to write songs, commentaries, poems, essays, books, to the glory of God.  They aid us in understanding the scriptures, but the best way to know the Bible is to read it and to write it.

Let it clothe you like a garment:  He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.  (Psalm 91:3-5)

Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, You are very great:  You are clothed with honor and majesty, (Psalm 104:1)

Let it comfort you:  My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.  (1 John 2:1-3)

How fortunate we are to have a book that assures us, educates us, cheers us, offers hope in a hostile world!  I urge you to get to know your Bible so that you may get to know the Lord more intimately.  Write it on your heart.  Allow it to daily change your life.  It will spill over to those around you.

Someone gave me an old hymnal the other day.  It was published in the 1940’s and looked as tired as I feel.  I collect old hymnals, why I don’t know; but for some reason I don’t want them to go into the trash.  They all mostly contain the same hymns, just not in the same order.  This one has childish pencil printing on the cover.  It seems to be intact with no pages missing.  The edges are thing and worn.

I thumbed through the old hymnal letting each song come into my mind.  Sometimes I recalled worship services where certain hymns were sung.  How many hands held this old book?  Did they really have to look at the words, or did they hold the hymns in their memory?  I remember my grandmother’s hands as they held a similar book, singing along with the congregation, praising God.  Her hands were gnarled and careworn.  What chores did she put off in order to assemble with her neighbors to worship the Lord?  I can still hear her singing.  …”O can we say we are ready, brother?  Ready for the soul’s bright home?  Say will he find you and me still watching, waiting, waiting when the Lord shall come?”  She, among others, passed on this love of worship and abundant life to me.

Our heritage is this abundant life, the gift of God.  May the Lord always find us trying to pass on this abundant life to future the generation.  It is with grateful appreciation that I write this to the generations who came before us, passing on the love of the knowledge and reverence for the worship and praise of the Lord.  May this abundant life flow from us to those we encounter daily.

“I am the door.  If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.  The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.  I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”  John 10:9-10 NKJV

"Goodbye, so long, auf wiedersehen, good night...."

It's the end of the Fall Season.  The weather is about to turn cold and the wind will finish blowing all the leaves off the trees.  Today I'm saying goodbye to all the things that happened this year.  It's been a banner year for learning, doing, and being.  Goodbye, greenhouse, see you in the late winter when the days are just beginning to get a smidge longer.  I'll be putting in seed trays full of tomatoes onions, broccoli, peppers...
Goodbye, beautiful fall leaves.  You have graced my house with beautiful color and much needed shade.

Goodbye to the last of the herbs...your days are quite literally numbered....Goodbye curly-leaf parsley...

Goodbye, flatleaf parsley....
 Goodbye little rosebud....
Things that were accomplished this year:  Chicken keeping comes to mind.  Having a water well drilled.  Remodeling the back side of the house....changed location of the back door:

Took out three sets of sliding glass doors and put in a french door:
A new wall in place of the third sliding glass door:

The new HVAC unit that had to be installed in the hottest week of this past summer:

But I'm not through with this year, just because the weather is worsening and the nights are longer.  I have a lot to look forward to.  I'm going to have grandchicks!  Probably in just a couple of weeks, too.  The little hen has gone in to her 'trance' and if concentration and focus can hatch eggs, then she is a champ!
Proud Papa and Little Sister:

I hope the chicks make it through the winter....Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

A Hog Rung Chicken Pen

by Patsy Melton
http://www.communitychickens.com/profile/profiles.html#patsy
I reinforced my dog kennel by attaching chicken wire to keep predators away from my little sisters (and brother)....the only thing is, I did it with plastic cable ties.   It's been a long, hot, dry summer and I'm thinking I need to replace the plastic cable ties with something more sturdy.  A friend suggested aluminum electrical wire--thin, strong, lightweight, and (gasp!) expensive as all get-out.  I explained my plight to the youngster in the local Tractor Supply and he suggested I use hog rings.  Hog rings??  What?  Then he explained how they would be squeezed together around both the kennel wire and chicken wire to hold them together.  Made a little more sense to me.
And they were CHEAP!  Even after buying the special wrench/handle that squeezed them it was still a deal.
And they should last thru the hottest summer and coldest winter.  We'll see.  The little sisters thanked me prodigiously with eggs. http://communitychickens.com/images/blogs/patsy.jpg

The Little Sisters of the Convent

The Little Sisters of the Convent

The little sisters needed help.  They didn't know they needed help.  As the 'abbess(?)' of this 'convent' I was determined to keep them safe from all harm.  Once I got the chicken wire all around the dog kennel, I felt that they were going to be all right.  My friend from church gave me another silkie hen to replace the one I lost.
We went along with our routine.  The sisters were laying eggs and I had enough to give eggs away to family and friends.
About this time one of the hens started crowing(gasp!).  Aha, a rooster has infitrated the convent.  Bless his heart, he was so young, he didn't know how to crow when he came here.  That is until he heard the call of another rooster who lives on a neighboring property.  When he first started crowing, it sounded like he was strangling and needed a Ricola.  He sounded sort of like the duck on the AFLAC commercial.  He soon had his vocal chords toned and trim, because it is the most shrill, nerve-shattering cockle-doodle-do that ever has been!  I knew this particular bird was growing bigger than the others.  I should have known this bird was mail because he began to develop this red, wrinkled, tumor-like thing on the front of his head.  I kept hearing the line from Kindergarten Cop in my head, "It's notta tumah!"
Silkies, I find, are very nurturing, very mothering hens.  They want to set on eggs and hatch them.  One day I was pleased to find that one of the hens continued to sit in the nesting box.  I figured she was trying to 'go broody'.  I left her alone.  She was so focused on hatching the eggs.  Nothing distracted her, not the crowing rooster, not the other hens pecking and scratching, eating bugs and cackling and talking to each other.  I started counting the days--21--till the eggs should hatch.  Every day I'd check on her.  It was like she was frozen in time, in suspended animation, awaiting the arrival of the mothership, er babyship!

During this period I got no eggs.  It seems that all eggs laid went under the little hen.  A nice lady on another blog that I follow told me I should have marked the eggs because the silkie would try to hatch all the eggs.  Another learning experience, folks.  And one egg hatched.  A baby chick who with his mother went into the penthouse appartment because he was small enough to go through the chicken wire.
